FULLERTON Councilman Shawn Nelson was honored with the 2009 Local Elected Official of the Year award presented Monday at the Republican Party of Orange County Central Committee meeting.
Nelson was honored for his commitment to smaller government and lower taxes, his willingness to stand up to pressure from special interest groups and strong support of property rights, according to a statement released by the Republican Party of Orange County.
“It is quite an honor to be recognized as the local elected official of the year by the Republican Party,” Nelson said Tuesday. “For me it means that the party is willing to recognize those of us that will fight for our core values even when it will come at a cost.
“I have fought for taxpayers at every turn and certainly was forced to draw the line in 2008 when it came to protecting the public against retroactive pension spiking. A Repulican should never be seen as a maverick for merely stepping forward and preventing government from giving away the public’s money.
“It is humbling to be recognized for doing only what was right,” Nelson said.
He was elected to the City Council in November 2002 to fill the remaining two years of an unexpired term. He was re-elected to a four-year term in November 2004, and again in November 2008.
